SHORT BIO: Born on May 21, 1981, in Park Ridge, Illinois, Craig Anderson was a star goalie with the Guelph Storm in the OHL when he was drafted 77th overall by the Calgary Flames in 1999. Instead of turning pro, he continued in juniors and re-entered the NHL Draft in 2001 after being named the OHL Goaltender of the Year. This time around, he was drafted 73rd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Anderson turned pro in 2001–02 as the backup for Norfolk in the AHL. He earned expanded AHL playing time the following year, leading to his first NHL call-up by Chicago. On November 30, 2002, he made his NHL debut when he replaced Jocelyn Thibault for the final 26:54 against Los Angeles, stopping all four shots he faced, before making his first NHL start two days later. Between 2003-04 and 2005-06, he served as Chicago's backup before entering a wild stretch in early 2006 where he was placed on waivers in January, bounced between Boston and St. Louis, and ultimately returned to the Blackhawks by February. He moved to the Florida Panthers organization in 2006–07, spending most of that season in Rochester. The following year, he secured the full-time backup role behind Tomas Vokoun, appearing in 17 games for Florida while posting a league-leading .935 save percentage. After proving he could handle a heavier workload, Anderson signed with Colorado for the 2009–10 season, delivering what was expected as he recorded career-highs with 71 games, 38 wins, and 7 shutouts. Partway through the 2010–11 season, Colorado traded him to Ottawa for Brian Elliott, kicking off his career-defining era as the team’s franchise goalie. Over ten seasons with the Senators (2010–11 to 2019-20), Anderson led the franchise through 435 regular-season games, collecting 202 wins, 28 shutouts, and 11 assists. He also appeared in 40 playoff games, even leading Ottawa to within a single goal of making the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals. Along the way, he led the NHL in both GAA and save percentage during the 2012-13 season and earned the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2016–17. Anderson signed with Washington in 2020-21 where he had a limited workload of four regular-season and two playoff games. He made his final stop by signing with the Buffalo Sabres in 2021–22, providing key veteran leadership for two seasons before retiring in 2023 to join the Sabres' front office. Among his career accolades include being named the OHL Goaltender of the Year (2001), representing the United States in the IIHF World Championships (2006, 2008), leading the NHL in save percentage (2008, 2013), and earning the Bill Masterton Trophy (2017). In his NHL career, he appeared in 709 regular season games, going 319-275-2-71 with 43 shutouts, 20 assists, a 2.86GAA, and a 0.912% save percentage. In 48 playoff games, he went 24-23 with 4 shutouts, 2 assists, a 2.36GAA, and a 0.929% save percentage. Where does Anderson stack up on the NHL’s all-time leaderboard? Out of 900 goalies in league history, his regular-season totals rank him: 30th in GP, 30th in Points, 35th in Wins, 42nd in Save Percentage, and 42nd in Shutouts He was even better when the pressure was highest as Anderson holds the 2ndhighest playoff save percentage in NHL history among goalies with at least 40 postseason appearances behind only Tim Thomas. |
