SHORT BIO: Born on May 28, 1969 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Damian Rhodes was drafted 112th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1987. After his draft year, he opted to play collegiate hockey before turning pro, putting in three seasons with Michigan Tech University. He also represented the United States in the 1988 World Junior Championships.
He turned pro in 1990-91, spending most of the season with Newmarket in the AHL, however he got a late-season call-up to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 1991. He made his NHL debut on March 22, 1991 vs the Detroit Red Wings. He stopped 25 shots in a 3-1 victory that day. Though he did not play, Rhodes was also a member of Team USA in the 1991 IIHF Worlds. He spent two more seasons in the AHL before becoming a regular NHLer with Toronto in 1993-94. He was acquired by the Ottawa Senators in 1995-96 and there, he spent four seasons as their number one goalie. Among his accomplishments there included leading the Sens to their first ever playoff series victory in 1998, and scoring a goal on Jan 2, 1999 by being the last player to touch the puck before a Devils player put the puck into their own empty net while a delayed penalty was called. That also happened to be the first time that a goalie-goal was scored in a shutout victory. In 1999-00, he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers, becoming the first ever player to be acquired by the new expansion team. In his three seasons with the Thrashers, though he was brought in to be their first ever starter, he struggled both with injuries, and in general due to the growing pains associated with expansion franchises. He did, however, record the first ever win and shutout for the franchise. After one final season spent in the minor-pros in 2002-03 and representing the USA at the 2003 IIHF Worlds, Rhodes retired from play. Among his career accolades include representing Team USA internationally (1988, 1991, 2000. 2003), recording the first ever playoff series win in Ottawa Senators history (1998), being credited with an NHL goal (1999), and recording the first win and shutout in Atlanta Thrashers history (1999). In his 309 game NHL career, Damian Rhodes went 99-140-48 with 12 shutouts, 1 goal, 6 assists, a 2.84GAA, and a 0.899% save percentage. In 13 playoff games, he went 5-7 with a 2.19GAA, and a 0.910% save percentage. |
