SHORT BIO: Born in Herning, Denmark, on October 2, 1989, Frederik Andersen was a rising star in European hockey when he was drafted 187th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2010, and later 87th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2012. Already highly decorated in Danish hockey, his dominant 2011–12 season with Frölunda in the Swedish Elitserien, where he led the league in shutouts, GAA, and save percentage, solidified him as a prime NHL prospect. He transitioned to North America for the 2012–13 season with the AHL's Norfolk Admirals. Andersen's NHL breakthrough came early in the 2013–14 season when an injury to Anaheim's Viktor Fasth opened the door for him. He made his NHL debut on October 20, 2013, replacing Jonas Hiller for the final two periods against the Dallas Stars, stopping all 24 shots he faced in relief. He went on to appear in 28 regular season and 7 playoff games that year, eventually forming an elite tandem with John Gibson over the next two seasons and even tying the NHL record as the fastest goaltender to reach 50 career wins (68 games). In 2016–17, Andersen was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he became a workhorse. Over 268 games, he backstopped Toronto to the playoffs in every season he was there, eventually leaving in 2021 as the fourth-winningest goaltender in Maple Leafs history.
Andersen joined the Carolina Hurricanes via free agency in 2021. Despite battling injuries, he remained an elite netminder and climbed to third on the franchise's all-time wins list. His time in Raleigh culminated in a 2025-26 postseason run which saw him backstop Carolina to the Stanley Cup Finals, recording 13 wins and 3 shutouts before Brandon Bussi took over for the final stretch to secure the Stanley Cup for the Canes. In the 2026 off-season, Andersen signed as a free agent with the Edmonton Oilers to bring veteran stability between the pipes. Among his career accolades so far include winning a U18 WJC D1 Gold Medal (2007), winning a U20 WJC D1 Gold Medal (2007), being named the Danish League MVP (2010), being named to the NHL All-Rookie Team (2014), winning the William M. Jennings Trophy (2016, 2022), being named the IIHF World Championship’s Best Goaltender (2018), appearing in two NHL All-Star Games (2020, 2022), being named a Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy finalist (2024), and winning a Stanley Cup (2026). |
