SHORT BIO: Born on November 7, 1995, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Hunter Shepard had an exceptional collegiate career at the University of Minnesota Duluth, setting numerous UMD records, as well as a remarkable NCAA record with 115 consecutive starts in goal. Undrafted, he signed with the Hershey Bears in June 2020 and quickly proved that he could succeed at the ECHL/AHL level, earning himself an NHL contract with the Washington Capitals in 2021. By 2022-23, he earned a full-time spot on the Hershey Bears and became a powerhouse goaltender in the AHL, leading them to a Calder Cup title and being the MVP of the playoffs. He made his NHL debut with the Capitals on October 25, 2023. Starting in goal vs the New Jersey Devils, he stopped 18 shots in a 6-4 win. That season, he also led Hershey to a second consecutive Calder Cup title, while being named the AHL’s Best Goaltender. After one additional season in the Capitals’ organization, he was signed by the Ottawa Senators for the 2025-26 season. There, he spent the majority of the season in the AHL, though he did appear in his final NHL game on January 5, 2026. After being traded to Montreal in March 2026 and being unsigned via free agency, Shepard headed overseas to join Barys Astana in the KHL for the 2026-27 season.
Among his career accolades include winning the NCAA Championship (2019), setting an NCAA record for most consecutive starts (115), winning the AHL Calder Cup (2023, 2024), being named the AHL Playoff MVP (2023), and being named the AHL’s Best Goaltender (2024). Barring an NHL comeback, in his NHL career, he appeared in 6 regular season games, going 2-3-1 with a 3.88GAA, and a 0.863% save percentage. He appeared in no NHL playoff games. |
