SHORT BIO: Born on February 22, 1997 in Magnitogorsk, Russia, Ilya Samsonov was drafted 21st overall by the Washington Capitals in 2015 after being named the Best Goaltender at the U-18 World Junior Championships that year. Opting to stay in Russia for the time being, Samsonov then won a Silver Medal with Russia at the 2016 World Juniors, as well as the 2016 KHL Gagarin Cup. In 2016-17, he won a bronze medal with Russia at the World Juniors and continued to produce elite numbers in the KHL. In 2018-19, he transitioned to North America, playing the season in the AHL with Hershey. In 2019-20, he made the opening day roster for the Washington Capitals and made his NHL debut on October 4, 2019 vs the New York Islanders. Starting in goal, he stopped 25 shots in a 2-1 win. By 2021-22, he had gone from being the full-time number two netminder, to a starter, splitting time with Vitek Vanecek and appearing in a career high 44 games with them in 2021-22. Signed as a free agent by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2022, Samsonov played 82 games over two seasons with them, pulling together an impressive 50-17-13 record while guiding them to playoff appearances in both seasons. The Vegas Golden Knights then signed him for the 2024-25 season, and there, he appeared in 29 games behind Adin Hill. At the conclusion of the that season, nobody had signed him, so Samsonov ended up returning to the KHL, playing for HK Sochi.
Among his career accolades include being named the Best Goaltender at the U-18 World Junior Championships (2015), winning silver and bronze at the U-20 World Junior Championships (2016, 2017), and winning the KHL Gagarin Cup (2016). In his NHL career, Ilya Samsonov appeared in 200 regular season games, going 118-48-25 15 shutouts, with 12 shutouts, 5 assists, a 2.77GAA, and a 0.902% save percentage. In 22 playoff games, he went 6-14 with a 3.05GAA, and a 0.901% save percentage. |
