Born on August 7, 1988, in Laval, Quebec, Jonathan Bernier was a star netminder for the Lewiston MAINEiacs when he was drafted 11th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2006. After his draft, he continued his strong play in juniors, as in the next season, he won the QMJHL Championship and was named the Playoffs MVP. On September 29, 2007, Bernier was given the start in goal for the Los Angeles Kings and made his NHL debut vs the Anaheim Ducks in London, England. Bernier stopped 26 shots in a 4-1 win. After four games played, he was returned to juniors. He even helped Canada win the IIHF World Junior Championships' Gold Medal that season. He fully turned pro in 2008-09, taking over the starting reins in Manchester. After another near-entire season in Manchester which saw him named the AHL's Best Goaltender, Bernier had stamped his full-time NHL ticket as he was officially made the number two netminder in LA behind Jonathan Quick. In his first full season in the NHL, he appeared in 25 games, while recording 11 wins and 3 shutouts. He also represented Canada at the 2011 IIHF Worlds that off-season. In 2011-12, while serving as the backup in LA, he and the Kings won the Stanley Cup, effectively immortalizing his name on the most famous trophy in sports. Due to the 2012-13 NHL Lockout that greatly shortened the season, Bernier played for and won a Spengler Cup with Team Canada. Bernier was then acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013. There, he spent the next three seasons as their number one goalie, appearing in 151 regular season games with them. His NHL journey then took him to Anaheim for a season, Colorado for a season, Detroit for three seasons, and then a final season in New Jersey in 2021-22. Injuries led him to miss most of 2021-22 and all of 2022-23. He then announced his retirement prior to the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.
In his NHL career, Jonathan Bernier appeared in 404 regular season games, going 165-163-40 with 18 shutouts, 8 assists, a 2.77GAA, and a 0.912% save average. In 9 playoff games, he went 2-5 with a 3.35GAA, and a 0.885% save average.
