SHORT BIO: Born on April 27, 1988, in Samara, Russia, Semyon Varlamov was a rising star in Russia when the Washington Capitals drafted him 23rd overall in 2006. The 2007 World Junior Championship Silver medalist transitioned to North America for the 2008-09 season, spending the majority of the season with the Hershey Bears in the AHL. That season, however, specifically on December 13, 2008, Varlamov made his NHL debut. Starting in goal, he stopped 32 shots in a 2–1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. He went on to post four wins in six regular-season appearances that year and also became the playoff starter for the team, appearing in 13 games.
By 2009-10, he had earned a full-time spot with the Capitals, appearing in 53 games over the following two seasons as the team’s number two netminder. In the 2011 off-season, Washington traded him to the Colorado Avalanche for a first-round pick. Varly spent eight seasons in Colorado, playing 389 games and earning 183 wins, still ranking second in franchise history behind only Patrick Roy in both categories. Varlamov then joined the New York Islanders as a free agent in 2019, immediately guiding the team to the Conference Finals in his first season. He eventually established a formidable tandem with fellow Russian goaltender Ilya Sorokin, however, injuries have hampered his recent career. He was limited to just 10 games in 2024-25 and missed the entire 2025-26 NHL season (aside from a two-game conditioning stint in Bridgeport) following dual knee replacement surgery. He is expected to return to the ice for the 2026-27 season. Among his career accolades so far include being winning a silver medal at the World Junior Championships (2007), winning a silver and a gold medal at the IIHF World Championships (2010, 2012), leading the NHL in wins (2014), and leading the NHL in shutouts (2021).
