2006 IIHF World Championships Game Worn Team Canada Jersey
Born on January 7, 1981 in Cold Lake, Alberta, Alex Auld was the 40th overall draft pick, selected by Florida in 1999. After concluding his junior career with the North Bay Centennials in 2001, Auld had his rights traded to Vancouver where he joined their system in 2001-02. In short order, he worked his way from the ECHL to the AHL, and then made his NHL debut on January 23, 2002 against Dallas. Auld stopped 20 of 22 shots to win his NHL debut 4-2. In the following two seasons, he got himself into thirteen additional games in the NHL, though he spent the majority of his time honing his skills in the AHL. In 2005-06, Auld earned the starting role in Vancouver, appearing in 67 games and earning 33 wins in the process. He then also appeared for Team Canada in the 2006 IIHF World Championships, playing a tandem with Marc Denis and earning 4th place in the tournament. In 2006-07, he was acquired by the Florida Panthers in the deal that saw Roberto Luongo end up in Vancouver. Auld, however, ceded the starting role to Ed Belfour so Auld was limited to 27 games. After that year, Auld turned into a journeyman goaltender from 2007-2012, playing with Phoenix, Boston, Ottawa, Dallas, New York Rangers, Montreal, and a second stint with Ottawa to close out his NHL career. He then played one final pro season in Salzburg in 2012-13 before retiring from play. Auld also earned the role of goalie coach with the University of British Columbia's hockey team from 2016-2018. He also takes on the role of a hockey analyst nowadays.
