Born on April 13, 1989, in Dearborn, Michigan, Jeremy Smith was a star OHL goalie with the Plymouth Whalers as he was an OHL Champion in 2006-07. He was drafted 54th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2007, though played two more years of junior hockey, even seeing 6 games of action for Team USA at the World Juniors in 2008 prior to turning pro. He joined the professional ranks in 2009-10 and in his very first season, he led the Cincinnati Cyclones to the ECHL Championship and he was also named the playoff MVP. He remained in the minor-pros for two more seasons before he got his first NHL recall with Nashville in January 2012, though he never got to play. Smith was signed by Columbus in 2013 and backed up in a pair of games with them in December 2013, again seeing no NHL action. In 2014, the Boston Bruins signed him, and he got recalled multiple times by them in both 2015 and 2016, however yet again, he saw no ice time. He was next signed by the Colorado Avalanche in 2016-17.
After Semyon Varlamov was injured mid-way through the campaign, Smith was promoted to become the full-time back up to Calvin Pickard from late December until the end of the season. Smith made his NHL debut on February 14, 2017 vs New Jersey and stopped 37 shots in a 3-2 loss. His third NHL game on February 25, 2017 vs Buffalo saw him record his first career NHL win as he stopped 34 shots in a 5-3 victory. Altogether, he appeared in 10 games for the Avs that year. Those ten games were to be his entire NHL career. He was signed by Carolina in 2017, then Bridgeport of the AHL in 2018 before heading overseas to play with Kunlun Red Star in the KHL, where has been ever since 2019-20. He even represented China at the Winter Olympics in 2022.
