Worn in goal for connor mcdavid's first nhl goal!
Born on November 16, 1983 in Helsinki, Finland, Kari Lehtonen was drafted 2nd overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2002 after some standout years in Finland which saw him earn multiple World Junior Championship Medals, and become an SM-Liiga Champion. In 2003, he began his North American pro journey. After delivering expectedly strong numbers while playing for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, Lehtonen got called up to the Thrashers in March 2004, and on March 19, 2004 he made his NHL debut. Getting the start in goal against the Florida Panthers, Lehtonen stopped 19 of 22 shots in a 3-2 win. That year, he appeared in 4 NHL games, recording a 4-0-0 record with one shutout, a 1.25GAA, and a 0.953 save average.
With the lockout in 2004-05, Lehtonen continued to play in the minors, leading the Chicago Wolves into the Calder Cup Final, where they were unfortunately swept in four games. After the lockout, Lehtonen appeared in 204 games for the Thrashers over the next four seasons, even leading them into their first ever playoffs in 2007. Lehtonen was traded to the Dallas Stars in 2009-10 and in Dallas, he played in 9 seasons and 445 NHL regular season games, leading them as far as game seven of the second round of the playoffs in 2016. After a final NHL season in 2017-18, Lehtonen was unsigned by any team and though he didn't officially announce his retirement, he did not express any desire to continue play, though likely at this point, it is safe to say that he is now retired.
In his NHL career, Kari Lehtonen appeared in 649 NHL games, recording a 310-233-0-67 record with 38 shutouts, 28 assists, a 2.70GAA, and a 0.912% save average. In 19 playoff games, he recorded an 8-9 record with two shutouts, a 3.30GAA, and a 0.887% save average. He is currently the 32nd all time winningest goalie in NHL history.
What you are looking at right now is a 2015-16 Dallas Stars Green Home Set 1 jersey worn by Kari Lehtonen in the first part of the season up to and including December 8, 2015. It features light wear including some black marks, pilling, a repair on the front crest, as well outlines indicating a possible number change on the sleeves from a heat-pressed to a sewn-on material. Arguably the most historic moment he wore it for was not even historic for him. On October 13, 2015, a certain rookie phenom named Connor McDavid and his team, the Edmonton Oilers, were facing Dallas. While Lehtonen was in goal wearing this jersey, McDavid tipped in an Andrej Sekera shot past Lehtonen for his first career NHL goal (the first of 239 goals so far). Lehtonen also recorded an assist in that game while wearing this jersey.
