1989-90 game worn edmonton oilers road jersey
*not 100% certain just yet
What you are looking at right now is a game worn 1989-90 Edmonton Oilers road jersey utilized by Mike Greenlay for both of his NHL games (and also extremely likely to be have been game worn by another two-game goalie in Randy Exelby- 23 days prior to Greenlay). It features a crude nameplate removal, unique heat-pressed letters for the name, some staining, puck marks, the covered up '88-89 anniversary patch common on the 89-90 jerseys, and also some crude sleeve shortening. Randy Exelby was the other goalie to wear #35 that season only 23 days prior to Greenlay so it is highly likely that the crude nameplate removal was due to this.
Born on September 15, 1968 in Vitoria, Brazil, Mike Greenlay was drafted 189th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 1986. After going the collegiate route by playing in the NCAA, Greenlay played a season in juniors in the WHL with Saskatoon. That year, he helped the Blades make it to the Memorial Cup tournament and though his squad did not win, Greenlay was named the Memorial Cup's "Most Outstanding Goaltender".
Greenlay transitioned to the pros the following season and he spent the majority of the year with Cape Breton. In February 1990, he got his recall to Edmonton. His NHL debut came on February 25, 1990 vs Calgary. After Eldon "Pokey" Reddick allowed six goals over two periods, Greenlay was sent in to play the final period. Greenlay stopped 13 of 17 shots in Edmonton's 10-4 defeat. His next game came three days later. With Bill Ranford getting ejected from the game in a match vs Los Angeles that saw a total of 356 penalty minutes issued, Greenlay played the final 26 seconds of the game.
Spending the rest of his time in the minors thereafter, Greenlay was signed by Tampa Bay in 1992. Though he never saw action with them, he led the Atlanta Knights, their minor-league affiliate, to the IHL Championship, and he and JC Bergeron also shared the James Norris Trophy. He was traded to Philadelphia in 1995 and he continued to play in the minors before retiring from play in 1996. After retiring he was a color commentator with the NHL's Minnesota Wild until 2020.
In his NHL career, Mike Greenlay appeared in 2 NHL games, recording an 0-0-0 record with one assist, a 12.00GAA, and a 0.765% save average.
