*final nhl game worn
Gilles Meloche, born July 12, 1950, was drafted 70th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1970, and to say he was a legend of the game is an understatement. He made his NHL debut with the Hawks in 1970-71 and never looked back. He played continuously in the NHL with the Hawks, California Golden Seals, California Seals, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars, and Pittsburgh Penguins until the end of the 1987-88 season.
In his career he appeared in a total of 788 games, and recorded a 270-351-131 record to go along with a 3.64 GAA, 20 shutouts, and a 0.875% save average. In the playoffs, Meloche appeared in 45 total games and recorded a 21-19 record with 2 shutouts, a 3.48GAA, and a 0.889% save average. Meloche is one of the league's top 50 all-time winningest goalies, as well as the league's 4th all-time losingest. After retiring from playing, he went on to become the goalie coach for the Pens, finally getting his name etched on the Stanley Cup when the team won the championship in 1991, 1992, and 2009.
The jersey you see is a 1987-88 Pittsburgh Penguins Road jersey, worn by Gilles Meloche in his final season, and in all of the team's road games as the set did not switch until the night after his final NHL game. It was likely bombarded by shot after shot from many teams, including one game against the Edmonton Oilers dream team. The jersey exhibits consistent wear including puck marks, unrepaired lacerations, neck-area piling, and salted fight strap buttons. A great piece from a high-flying era in hockey.
