1991-92 los angeles kings game used sher-wood stick
(*possibly used with bruins)
Born on January 26, 1966 in Longueuil, Quebec, Daniel "The Bandit" Berthiaume was an outstanding junior goalie who was drafted 60th overall by Winnipeg in 1985. At the conclusion of his junior career in 1986, he was thrown into NHL action shortly thereafter on April 12, 1986. Down two games to none vs the Flames in the preliminary round of the playoffs, a desperate Jets team brought up Berthiaume and threw him into action. Going into overtime, he stopped 39 of 43 shots in a 4-3 defeat.
Next year, he became the full-time backup on the team with Eldon "Pokey" Reddick as the number one and Steve Penney's injuries preventing him from taking on his intended role. Berthiaume recorded his first shutout only two regular season games into his career. He had taken over the starting role by the next season (56GP), then had some struggles over the following two seasons, as he only appeared in 33 more games for the Jets before being traded to the North Stars in 1990. After five games played in Minnesota, Berthiaume was traded to Los Angeles in September 1990 and he had an excellent first year with them over 37 games played. His numbers dipped in 1991-92, which prompted the Kings to trade him to Boston. After only 8 games in Boston, he signed as a free agent with Ottawa in 1992 and over 26 games, only recorded 2 wins on a team which struggled mightily. Afterwards, Berthiaume continued to play in various minor-pro leagues before retiring from play in 2005. Since his retirement, he has taken up coaching, most recently as the Goaltending Coach at Liberty University in Virginia.
In his NHL career he appeared in 215 regular season games, recording an 81-90-21 record with 5 shutouts, 4 assists, a 3.67GAA, and a 0.878% save average. In 14 playoff games, he recorded a 5-9 record with a 3.72GAA and a 0.877% save average.
What you are looking at right now is a Sher-Wood goalie stick that was used by Daniel Berthiaume in the 1991-92 season with the Kings and/or Bruins. This item also happened to come from the collection of CMW in Edmonton which is the company which makes the silver presentation sticks (items) for the NHL for such things as "1000 games", or anything that a team wants done in silver. They use the game used or game model sticks of the athletes as a base from which to make accurate silver sticks completely to scale for these accomplishments. It is possible that this stick was also used as a base for some presentation item for Berthiaume from one of his teams.
