1982-84 new jersey devils Game Worn JOFA Goalie Mask
Born on June 21, 1950, in Birtle, Manitoba, Ronald Albert Low was originally drafted 103rd overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1970 after playing in the Memorial Cup in consecutive seasons with the Dauphin Kings of the MJHL. After his draft, he spent the 1970-71 and 1971-72 seasons with various minor league teams before he finally made the cut and became the full-time back-up in Toronto alongside Jacques Plante in 1972-73. He made his NHL debut on October 21, 1972 and stopped 18 of 21 shots in a 3-1 defeat against the Detroit Red Wings. He played that lone season in Toronto recording a 12-24-4 record with one shutout, before winding back up in the minors the following year and then being claimed by Washington in the Expansion Draft of 1974. In Washington, Low spent three seasons as the team's starter, a tough job given the teams generally poor play. In 1977, the Detroit Red Wings signed Low to back up Jim Rutherford. After the 1977-78 season, Low once again fell into the minors. The Nordiques then signed Low in yet another Expansion Draft, before Quebec traded him on to Edmonton for Ron Chipperfield that same season. Low ended up with the Oilers from 1980 until the 1982-83 season when both Moog and Fuhr made Low's role with the team obsolete. As a result, he was traded to the New Jersey Devils where he spent three seasons backing up Glenn "Chico" Resch. In 1985-86, he played six games in the AHL with the Nova Scotia Oilers before retiring from play and immediately jumping into an assistant coaching job with the team. In 1986-87, Low became one of the assistant coaches for the Oilers and ended up winning his first Cup with them, as a member of the coaching staff. The following season, he took over the head coaching job for the Nova Scotia/Cape Breton Oilers for two more seasons before making his way back up to the Edmonton Oilers as an assistant coach in 1989-90. That season, he got his name on the Stanley Cup a second time. He remained an assistant coach on the Edmonton Oilers until 1994-95 before taking over the head coaching job and then remaining in it until the end of the 1998-99 season. He was then the head coach of the Houston Aeros for a season in 1999-00 before taking over the head job with the Rangers from 2000-2002 and then remaining as a scout with them until 2004. He then took on two years as goalie coach with the Ottawa Senators from 2005-2007, and then part of 2007-08 as assistant coach with them before being fired.
In his playing career, Ron Low appeared in 382 career regular season games, and recorded a 102-203-38 record with 4 shutouts, a 4.28 GAA, and a 0.869 save average. In seven playoff games, he recorded a 1-6 record with a 3.85GAA and a 0.892% save average.
The piece you are looking at now is a Jofa goalie mask worn by Ron Low in his first two seasons in New Jersey. The mask shows tremendous wear throughout as well as salt deposits on the metal components of the mask. It is also photomatched to a photograph from the 1980s that matches the wear on the right ear area dead-on. The cage was unfortunately re-used on his next mask (the more famous one) so it was not kept attached to this one. This item was acquired from former New Jersey Devils Equipment Manager Keith Parker who worked 6 seasons with the team.
