*Matt Berlin
Circa 2019 University Of Alberta Golden Bears Possible Game-Issued jersey (NOBR)
What you are looking at right now is a circa 2019 possible game-issued, maybe backup-worn Matt Berlin University of Alberta Golden Bears jersey. Berlin has been the only goalie on the roster officially assigned #35 for the Golden Bears since 2019-20, with the only previous #35 goalie for them in the past decade being Zach Sawchenko. The jersey exhibits a clear nameplate removal with the outline and length of the former plate matching to what would have fit the 6 letters of "Berlin". Though mostly very clean, we could spot two dark marks on it and a small potential post-paint transfer red mark on it. There may be more given the jersey is itself dark.
*The wear is too light to say definitively that it is game wear, the Adidas maker likely puts it around the 2019 and earlier time period, and with a lack of the Canada West patch on the torso, we are sticking with it being game issued at best at this time. Note that in the case of an EBUG who played in the NHL, anything remotely associated with them counts as having their name crossed off of our museum's wantlist given their extreme scarcity.
Matt Berlin was born on January 20 1998 in Edmonton, Alberta. A goalie who had reached the WHL, but was never drafted, he started with the Spokane Chiefs in 2015-16, was a WHL Champion on the Seattle Thunderbirds in 2017 and played one further season in 2017-18, splitting the season with Seattle and Kootenay. After an additional season in the AJHL in 2018-19, it looked like the pros were out of reach so Berlin entered the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta in 2019-20. He appeared in 15 games plus 2 playoff games for the Golden Bears that year and saw no action in 2020-21 due to the pandemic shutting down University hockey. He played 1 game with the U of A in 2021-22, though Berlin was signed by the Colorado Avalanche to be their Emergency Backup Goalie after Pavel Francouz was injured on April 22, 2022. He saw no game action that day. In 2022-23, Berlin, still with the Golden Bears, got the EBUG call once again. This time, however, it was the Edmonton Oilers who signed him to backup in the place of an ill Stuart Skinner. With the Oilers comfortably up 7-3 near the end of that game, Berlin was given the experience of a lifetime as he entered the Oilers' crease for the final 2:26 of the game. He stopped 1 shot as the Oilers won the game 7-3. As of 2023-24, Matt Berlin is still a member of the Golden Bears hockey team.
In his NHL career, Matt Berlin appeared in 1 NHL regular season game, going 0-0-0, with a 0.00GAA, and a 1.000% save average.
