2006-07 GAME-WORN CALGARY FLAMES VAUGHN LEG PADS
*FINAL NHL GAME WORN PADS (ALSO USED IN RUSSIA AND JAPAN)
Jamie "Noodles" McLennan, born June 30, 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta, was drafted 48th overall in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. "Noodles" became his nickname during junior hockey because he would often bring his own soups and pastas with him on the team bus due to his dislike of cheap diner food the team would consume while on the road. After two seasons in the pro minor leagues, Jamie made his first NHL appearance in the 1993-94 season for the Isles, eventually getting into 22 games in his rookie year. He continued to split time between the Islanders and the minor leagues for the next two seasons before the St. Louis Blues signed him as a free agent in 1996. He spent one entire year in the minors before becoming the full time back up over the next three seasons, to Grant Fuhr. The Minnesota Wild swiped McLennan during the 2000 Expansion Draft and as the back up, he posted a mere five wins in 38 appearances. He spent the next season in the minors before being acquired by Calgary. He spent almost two seasons as the back-up goalie in Calgary before being acquired by the New York Rangers in 2003-04. After the lock-out season, McLennan was signed to back up Robert Luongo with the Panthers in 2005-06. He played one additional season in Calgary in 2006-07 before leaving the NHL.
In his career, from 1993-94 to 2006-07, Mr. McLennan appeared in 254 games and recorded an 80-109-36 record with a 2.68 GAA, 13 shutouts, and a 0.898 save average. He also appeared in five playoff games in his career, including an infamous one which these pads are directly associated with.
This piece is a set of game-worn pads used from the latter part of March 2007, until the end of McLennan's career, being used in both his final regular season game, as well as in the last game of his NHL career. The pads were also used during his time in Russia and possibly his time in Japan. It first saw game action in the regular season on April 8, 2007 when McLennan made 26 stops on 32 shots in a 6-3 loss against the Colorado Avalanche. The next time it saw game action was in arguably the most infamous moment of McLennan's NHL career. On April 21, 2007, in game five of the playoffs against the Detroit Red Wings, McLennan was put in goal in relief of Kiprusoff. Down 5-1 at the end of the third period, McLennan was in the hot seat to try and motivate the team. Instead, his emotions uncharacteristically got the better of him just 13 seconds into his appearance when he slashed Red Wings' forward Johan Franzen in the stomach. In those 13 seconds of ice time, McLennan was given 17 minutes in penalties, as well as a five game suspension to top it all off. He closed out the season in the KHL and eventually ended his playing career after a season in Japan. Currently, he is an analyst with TSN.
