1994-95 Game Worn pei senators White Jersey
Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada on August 6, 1971 Mike Bales was an oft-peppered goaltender at Ohio State University. Noticing the potential in Bales, the Boston Bruins drafted him 105th overall in 1990. After finishing his University career he transitioned over to the American Hockey League with the Providence Bruins, where he took over the starting role. And then, like with the other goalies, it happened. On January 9, 1993 after John Blue was pulled, Mike Bales made his NHL debut for the Bruins against the New Jersey Devils. Bales stopped nine of ten shots in the team's 6-2 loss. He played the entirety of the following season with Providence before being signed by the Ottawa Senators. In 1994-95, Bales was the starting goaltender for the PEI Senators and appeared for three minutes in a single game with the main club. The following season, he spent the majority of the season with the Ottawa Senators. He appeared in 20 games that season, recording a 2-14-1 record. Then in 1996-97, he made one final appearance for the Sens. From there he remained with minor league affiliates of the Sabres and Stars until the conclusion of 2000-01. Afterwards he travelled to Europe and played in Britain, Germany and Sweden before retiring in 2010. He joined the Pittsburgh Penguins' coaching staff in 2011-12 and in 2015-16, as goalie coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mike Bales mentored young goaltender Matt Murray, who eventually led the team to a Stanley Cup victory. After one additional season with the Pens in 2016-17, the Carolina Hurricanes hired him as a goalie coach. After two seasons with the team, including 2018-19 when the team made the conference finals due to strong goaltending, the team parted ways with Bales. Thereafter, the Buffalo Sabres hired him in 2019-20 to be their goalie coach.
In his playing career, Bales appeared in 23 NHL games, recording a 2-15-1 record with a 4.13GAA, and a 0.869% save average. He appeared in no playoff games.
