1984-85 AND 1985-86 Game Worn new york islanders Road Jersey (NOBR)
*playoff debut jersey
Kelly Stephen Hrudey was born on January 13, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta. Boasting a decent junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Hrudey was chosen 38th overall by the New York Islanders in 1980. He made his NHL debut in the 1983-84 season on October 8, 1983, posting a win after replacing Rollie Melanson in an 8-7 victory over the Jets. He remained with the Islanders as a number one goalie until 1988-89, when he was traded to the Kings. There, he maintained his starter status, even leading them to the Cup Final in 1992-93. In the 1996 off-season, Hrudey was signed by the San Jose Sharks where he played an additional two years before retiring from play. In his NHL career, Hrudey played in 677 games and recorded a 271-265-88 record with 17 shutouts, a 3.43GAA, and a 0.893 save average. In addition, he appeared in 85 playoff games and recorded a 36-46 record with a 3.29GAA and 0.891 save average.
This sweater first began use in the 1984-85 season New York Islanders as a road jersey used by Kelly Hrudey as a likely Set 2 jersey from mid-season until the end of the playoffs. It was possibly worn in his fight with John Vanbiesbrouck on February 17, 1985 among many other games that year for a possible total of 11 regular season games and 3 playoff games. It is definitively photomatched to his playoff debut, an April 11, 1985 playoff game against Washington, in which Kelly took his team to a double overtime loss. Hrudey also wore this sweater in two games in the next round against Pelle Lindbergh and the Philadelphia Flyers. It was then re-used into the 1985-86 season, even being videomatched to a March 16, 1986 game vs the Rangers, and then photomatched to a March 20, 1986 contest vs Toronto (questions regarding the date label were made, however the presence of Wendel Clark in the images made it impossible for those particular images to be from 1984-85 as Clark was in juniors at that time). The wear is a testament to this high flying, high scoring era of hockey. Heavy puck marks on the crest and on the arms, three team repairs and multiple unrepaired holes adorn the sweater. The nameplate was removed by the team.
Dates of game use: Potentially up to ten games before the playoffs, then:
April 4, 1985 v Philadelphia Flyers (3-0L, 23-26)
April 11, 1985 v Washington Capitals (2-1 2OTL, 39-41)
April 18, 1985 v Philadelphia Flyers (3-0L, 35-38)
April 28, 1985 v Philadelphia Flyers (1-0L, 37-38)
Indeterminate number of games in the 1985-86 season
