Circa 1991-92 Hartford whalers / Springfield Indians / Philadelphia flyers Game Used Vaughn Glove and Blocker Set
This goalie was born in Prince George, British Columbia on February 13, 1965. In this goalie's first year with Kamloops of the WHL back in 1983-84, he took over the starting position on the team and led the team to the Memorial Cup playoffs as Kamloops was the winner of the WHL. This goalie's name...Daryl "Razor" Reaugh. After this standout season with Kamloops, the Edmonton Oilers drafted him 42nd overall in the 1984 Entry Draft. In 1984-85 he continued his unreal play as the starter for the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL, posting a wild 36-8-1 record in 49 games. And like the tales of everyone in my museum, the opportunity came. On March 3, 1985, Reaugh was recalled by Edmonton and given the start in goal against the Winnipeg Jets, facing down Brian Hayward on the opposite end of the ice. Reaugh stopped 30 of 35 shots in the team's 6-3 defeat. By 1985-86, Reaugh had become the AHL guy for the Nova Scotia Oilers. In 1987-88 more opportunities came as he split time between Nove Scotia in the AHL, Milwaukee in the IHL, and with the parent club Edmonton Oilers of the NHL (though most of the season was spent as the back-up with the Oilers). He played in six games for the Oilers that year, recording his first career win in the process. Though the Oilers won the Cup, Reaugh's name was not immortalized on the Stanley Cup with the rest of the team. The next season, he was once again relegated to the minors so he headed to Finland to play for the majority of the season. In 1989, the Hartford Whalers decided to sign Reaugh as a free agent. Reaugh appeared in 20 games for the team, recording personal bests in all categories, including wins, GAA, save average, and shutouts before a season ending injury occurred. According to many documented sources, another player accidentally skated over Reaugh's catching glove and sliced Daryl's hand badly. He made his return to the AHL in 1991-92, appearing in 22 games with Springfield. The following season he was in the Philadelphia Flyers' system and got into a single game in the AHL with the Hershey Bears, and in 1993-94, he lasted four games in the ECHL before another injury eventually forced him into retirement at only 28 years of age. Since 1996-97, he has been the play-by-play announcer for the Dallas Stars and has found a new career rejuvenation in this particular NHL path as his goaltending path was derailed so prematurely.
In 27 career NHL games, Reaugh recorded an 8-9-1 record with one shutout, a 3.47GAA, and a 0.885% save average. He appeared in no post-season games in the big league.
What you are looking at is a Daryl Reaugh worn glove and blocker set from circa 1991-92 and into the 1992 pre-season. Wear is substantial, consistent with at least a season of use. 1991-92 would have seen him affiliated with Hartford and though he was in the minors exclusively, he may have also seen some time in pre-season or training camp action with Hartford. What is peculiar is the front of the blocker. The Whalers colors were covered up with black paint, only to be revealed again with either age or wear. The blocker has been photomatched to Reaugh's use of it in pre-season action with the Philadelphia Flyers!
