Jean-Francois Labbe
2001-02 columbus blue jackets and/or syracuse crunch practice worn glove
What you are looking at right now is a 2001-02 game worn CCM Heaton 6 goalie glove used by Jean-Francois Labbe with the Columbus Blue Jackets and/or Syracuse Crunch. Its distinguishing feature that localizes it to that season is the distinct red block CCM letters on the cuff. His identical 2002-03 glove features black block letters instead. Due to certain recognizable features, Jean-Francois Labbe has informed us that this was his practice glove from that year. It features decent wear including black marks, abrasions, and eyelets with salt/rust.
Born on June 15, 1972, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Jean-Francois Labbe was a star goalie in the QMJHL and turned pro in 1993-94 on a minor league deal. His strong play that year, including being named the CoHL Rookie of the Year, got him signed by the Ottawa Senators in 1994. After two seasons in Ottawa's system, he was traded to Colorado.
In the Avs' system, he was an AHL All-Star in his first season, then really took off in 1996-97 with Hershey. Labbe was an AHL All-Star, a Calder Cup Champ, and named the AHL's MVP as he led the league with the best GAA, most shutouts, and most wins. On top of that, he was named the AHL's Best Goaltender and part of the Best Goaltending Duo (an award which he actually shared with no-one). He also got recalled for four games by Colorado, but never got into game action. Labbe was signed by the Edmonton Oilers in 1997 and was again an AHL All-Star. The musical chairs continued in 1998 as he became property of the Rangers. 1999-00 was yet another memorable season for him as he was yet again an AHL All-Star, winner of the Best Goaltending Duo Award, a Calder Cup Champ, and he also scored a goal, becoming just the 5th AHL goalie in history to accomplish that. On top of that, he got to make his NHL debut for the New York Rangers on April 5, 2000. Starting in goal vs Montreal, he stopped 19 shots in a 3-0 loss.
Labbe was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets early in the 2000-01 season and in 2001-02, he appeared in 3 NHL games with them while also leading the AHL with the most shutouts. In 2002-03 he was promoted to be the full-time backup to Marc Denis, appearing in 11 total games. He bounced around Europe and around other various minor-pro leagues before retiring from play in 2011. He took up coaching after his retirement and was also inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame in 2015-16.
In his NHL career, Jean-Francois Labbe appeared in 15 games, recording a 3-6-0 record with a 3.44GAA, and a 0.889% save average.
