What you are looking at right now is a game used Northland goalie stick used by Wayne Rutledge while with the Houston Aeros of the WHA in the 1970s. It features light, though visible wear, a crack at the end of the stick blade and the proper aged staining on the tape of the stick knob.
Wayne Rutledge was born on January 5, 1942 in Barrie, Ontario. The CPHL Terry Sawchuk Trophy winner in 1966 was claimed from the Rangers by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft and served the entire 1967-68 season with the Kings as part of a tandem with Terry Sawchuk. Rutledge made his NHL debut for the Kings on Oct 14, 1967. Facing the Philadelphia Flyers, he stopped 14 of 16 shots that he faced in a 4-2 win. Rutledge appeared in 45 games that season. For the next two seasons, his NHL role diminished as he only appeared in a combined 37 regular season games before ending up in the minors.
Rutledge was then drafted by the Houston Aeros of the WHA in 1972. He played six seasons with them and won two Avco World Trophies with them in 1974 and 1975 respectively. In addition, he was also a WHA All-Star in 1977. Rutledge retired from play in 1979 and was inducted into the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. On October 5, 2004, he passed away due to stomach cancer.
