jonas gustavsson
2015-16 boston bruins game used warrior goalie stick
Born on October 24, 1984, in Danderyd, Sweden, Jonas "The Monster" Gustavsson was a highly successful goalie in Sweden when he was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009. That of course came after an epic season which saw him win the Elitserien Championship, saw him named the Elitserien Best Player, saw him record the best GAA and save percentage, and also saw him win the IIHF Worlds bronze medal, definitely earning his nickname.
Naturally, he made the Maple Leafs out of training camp and then...it happened. On October 3, 2009, he was sent in to replace Vesa Toskala in a match vs the Washington Capitals. In just over 38 minutes of action, Gustavsson stopped 16 of 19 shots in a 6-4 loss. Though he did lose some time in his rookie season to heart problems requiring surgeries, he still appeared in 42 games that year, recording 16 wins, 1 shutout and a decent enough 0.902% save average. He also represented Sweden in the Winter Olympics. The next year, he appeared in 23 games, though in the middle of the season, he once again needed a heart surgery after he was sent to the AHL, but he was back in action in less than two weeks. Next year, he once again appeared in 42 games, recording career highs in wins (17) and shutouts (4). Signed by the Detroit Red Wings in 2012-13, Gustavsson remained as a backup goalie there for three seasons. Joining the Bruins in 2015-16, "The Monster" had a good season with 24 appearances. Signed by the Edmonton Oilers in 2016-17, the hope was that he would be a good backup option for Cam Talbot, however, he struggled and saw only 7 games in Edmonton. In the AHL that year, however, he was credited with a goal and an assist over 20 games of action. He played three more seasons in Sweden with Linkoping before retiring from play in 2020.
In his NHL career, Jonas Gustavsson appeared in 179 regular season games, recording a 72-67-23 record with 7 shutouts, 4 assists, a 2.88GAA and a 0.901% save average. In 2 playoff games, he recorded an 0-2 record with a 2.72GAA and a 0.917% save average.
